About the Event
Nestled on the shimmering shores of Lake James, the Lake James Antique & Classic Boat Show is a delightful one-day celebration of nostalgia, craftsmanship, and lakeside joy that draws over 5,000 enthusiasts each summer. Picture gleaming wooden boats from the mid-20th century bobbing gently in the water, classic cars polished to perfection lining the shore, and the hum of vintage engines mingling with live music and laughter—it's a perfect blend of history and heartfelt community spirit. What makes it truly special is its free, family-friendly vibe, organized by the local chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society, transforming a simple boat gathering into a vibrant festival with art, food, and kid-friendly fun. Attendees come for the stunning displays, stay for the stories shared by proud owners, and leave with a renewed appreciation for Indiana's watery heritage, all wrapped in that warm, welcoming small-town charm that feels like a step back in time. ## The Surrounding Area

This event brims with hands-on delights for all ages. Marvel at over 60 antique and classic boats—think restored Chris-Crafts and Centuries—docked near the Lake James/Jimmerson Lake bridge, where owners share restoration tales and fire up engines around noon for that signature mechanical purr. On shore, dozens of collector cars from Corvettes to Bentleys, vintage outboard motors, and even rare Chris-Craft camper trailers steal the spotlight, with some available for sale. Art lovers will adore the expansive exhibition tent hosted by Steuben Arts Scene, featuring local paintings, jewelry, ceramics, colorful wooden fish by kids, and live oil painting demos along the channel. Food trucks dish out fair favorites like foot-long hot dogs, Sno-Cones, and other treats, while vendor booths overflow with crafts and vintage finds. Live bands keep the energy flowing all day, and a dedicated kids' area offers wooden boat model kits to paint—courtesy of organizer Mike McBride—sparking creativity and souvenirs. Stroll the waterfront, chat with exhibitors, and bask in the festive, inclusive atmosphere that makes every moment memorable. ## Schedule & Logistics

Rooted in passion for preservation, the Lake James Antique & Classic Boat Show has evolved from a modest meeting of the Antique and Classic Boat Society's local chapter—dedicated to boats at least 25 years old—into a beloved regional tradition held annually on the last Saturday in July. Longtime organizer Mike McBride, a Lake James resident and Chris-Craft owner, has been deeply involved since the inaugural show, expanding it with personal touches like kids' wooden boat kits he crafts himself. What started as a showcase for historic wooden watercraft has grown to embrace classic cars, vintage motors, art from groups like the Angola Artists Guild and Steuben Arts Scene, live music, and community gatherings, drawing thousands while honoring northeast Indiana's boating legacy. Its significance shines in fostering local pride, craftsmanship, and intergenerational connections, cementing its place as a heartfelt highlight of Steuben County's summer heritage.
