History & Founding

Christmas at the Seiberling is rooted in the rich history of the Seiberling Mansion, a National Register-listed Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival masterpiece built in 1891 by industrialist Monroe Seiberling during Indiana’s gas boom. Over the years, the mansion served as a private residence, a university building, and, since 1970, as the Howard County Museum.

The holiday event itself began as a way to showcase the mansion’s architectural splendor and to engage the community during the festive season. Visitors not only experience the beauty of the Victorian era but also learn about Howard County’s industrial and social history. The event has grown into a cherished local tradition, drawing thousands each year to marvel at the decorations, enjoy seasonal activities, and celebrate community heritage. The Howard County Historical Society, which manages the mansion, organizes the event with support from local sponsors and volunteers, ensuring its continuation as a highlight of Kokomo’s holiday calendar.
